The measurements being discussed here are what we call Opening Size measurements. This is where you measure the size of the opening that the blind will be placed into.
Before we discuss measuring, firstly here are some window basics…
- The width is the horizontal measurement across the opening.
- The drop is the vertical measurement downward.
- The architrave is the timber fitted around the casings of internal doors or windows. The purpose of architrave is to hide the joint between the wall/ceiling and the casings.
- When measuring for internal furnishings, always specify width as the first measurement.
There are 2 types of ways to fit a blind, and each requires different measurements.
Reveal Fit (or In Fit)
In this situation the window furnishing will be fitted inside the architrave. The width and drop measurements are taken as shown in the diagram below.
Always take 2 measurements. For example, when measuring the drop, take one measurement on the LHS followed by another on the RHS. Use the shortest measurement.
Face Fit (or Out Fit)
In this situation the window furnishing will be fitted onto the outside of the architrave. The width and drop measurements are taken from the outside edge of the architrave to the outside edge of architrave.
Always take 2 measurements. For example, when measuring the drop, take one measurement on the LHS followed by another on the RHS. Use the shortest measurement.
Bracket Measurements
Sometimes brackets are installed prior to the blinds. It is a great way to complete a check measure. If you install brackets first, complete your measurements from outside of bracket to outside of bracket.
